Resolve to Take Better Care of Your Appliances

It's hard not to take your appliances for granted - you use them so often that they've become a normal part of your day-to-day life, to the point where you don't even give much thought to their use. However, once an appliance begins having issues or, even worse, breaks down, you suddenly realize what an important function it played in your life.

Because of this, you should make taking care of your appliances more of a priority. In fact, why not make it a New Year's resolution? The following are a couple of appliance maintenance tips that will help you take better care of your appliances this upcoming year, thereby ensuring that they remain in good working condition for a longer time to come:

Keep your appliances clean

One of the common traps that we all fall into is to just assume that your appliances should work at their optimal level no matter what and that if they don't, then that appliance must be in need of appliance repair. But one of the things that you should be doing to ensure that your appliances continue to function properly is to keep them clean. Cleaning your appliances and their components is not difficult, and it will help with their efficiency. The following are a few cleaning tips for several major appliances:

  • The refrigerator - The refrigerator's condenser coils help cool the refrigerant that allows your refrigerator to function. When they become dusty, they will work less efficiently, which results in more energy being wasted trying to keep the refrigerator's temperature cool. You should clean the coils every six months by brushing them and vacuuming up nearby debris (be sure to unplug the fridge before doing so). You should also clean the gaskets regularly to help ensure a tight seal.

  • The washing machine - Like dryers, most washing machines also have lint traps. If you don't clean the lint trap regularly, it can result in your clothes coming out of the washer with a coat of lint on them. The lint trap can be located in different parts of the machine depending on the model. Sometimes, it's along the top rim of the washer drum, sometimes it's at the end of the drainage hose and sometimes it's inside the center agitator.
  • The dryer - One-third of all dryer-related fires are caused by dirty lint filters. You should always remove the lint from your filter before using the dryer. Every six months, clean the filter using a nylon brush.

Give your appliances a tune-up

In addition to simply keeping your appliances clean, you should consider scheduling an inspection of your appliances once a year. By getting a professional to come in and inspect things like the electric or gas lines to your stove or the vent pipe of your dryer, you'll not only ensure that these appliances will work properly but that they will work safely as well. Not to mention that during such inspections, small issues can be quickly taken care of before they grow into major problems that might require major appliance repair or even replacement in the future.

If you want your appliances to work as effectively, efficiently and safely as possible for a long time to come, then you should make it your New Year's resolution to take better care of your appliances by keeping them clean and by scheduling an annual appliance inspection.
